Acknowledgements

No endeavor as long and as involved as a Ph.D. should be undertaken alone. Fortunately, I have received all manner of support from many people throughout my graduate experience. Thanks first of all to my advisor, Dr. Robert Murphy for having the seed of an idea that grew into this project. His intellectual rigor and ability to analyze problems proved central to my training. Thanks also to my thesis committee: Dr. David Casasent, Dr. Frederick Lanni, and Dr. Raúl Valdés-Pérez. The multi-disciplinary nature of this project required a committee with diverse specialties and their critiques and contributions are all appreciated.

Good Ph.D. training requires good institutions and I therefore want to express my gratitude to everyone at the Center for Light Microscope Imaging and Biotechnology at CMU. The technical expertise and resources of the center were invaluable during my training. Thanks also to the University of Pittsburgh/Carnegie Mellon University MD/PhD program for providing the resources and the environment for me to receive such a world-class education.

On a personal note, I want to acknowledge and thank my family in general and my wife and parents in particular for supporting me throughout this long educational process (I will get a job someday, I promise!).
